The Charlestown Schoolhouse Garden is located on the grounds of the Cross Mills Library. The garden is planted and maintained by several Master Gardeners under the direction of Ralph and Mary Minopoli.
Sited in front of the historic District 2 one-room schoolhouse, the 26x28-foot garden contains over forty perennials and herbs. It is a fine example of sustainability since there is no running water to the area. The only water is provided by a rain barrel which sits next to the schoolhouse, collecting precipitation from the roof.
The schoolhouse is open to the public during the summer season and Master Gardeners are on hand on Wednesdays from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. to answer questions and assist with plant identification. Last year over one hundred visitors received handouts and had their gardening questions answered on site.
