City Courtyard Garden at The
Providence Ronald McDonald House
Project Start
Date: 2008
This new community project
involved a renovation of the non-profit agency’s small, inner courtyard
to provide a low-maintenance outdoor space where guests and volunteers
could sit and enjoy a peaceful environment. The
non-profit agency provides a home-away-from-home for families of
children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, and is sustained by
private donations and a dedicated staff of volunteers. The courtyard has
a ring of border gardens and employs xeriscaping techniques to address
the hot, dry conditions of the predominantly bricklaid space. This
project includes educating and training a rotating staff of volunteers
on the care and seasonal maintenance of drought-tolerant, perennial,
container and herb plantings.

Project Start Date: 2000
Anywhere from 6-10
Master Gardeners volunteer on this project each year. The educational
goals of the project are to teach the public about the plants in the
garden and how to maintain a sustainable garden. The Master Gardeners
and local residents jointly care for a butterfly garden and a water
garden. Once a month, during the season, there is a group workday. Also,
a series of lectures are arranged throughout the year at the Cumberland
Library which is located on the Monastery grounds.
In the spring,
there is a Gardening Day that is open to the public with plant sales,
demonstrations, and talks on gardening topics. Local gardening clubs
participate at these events along with the Master Gardeners. The Town of
Cumberland is also involved with this project. Learn more

Daggett Farm Greenhouses
Located in
Slater Memorial Park, Pawtucket, RI
Project Start Date: 1999
The Daggett Farm Greenhouse and
Gift Shop, in the old Slater Park Zoo, in Pawtucket, RI, was opened as a
collaborative project with the City of Pawtucket and the Blackstone
Valley Chapter RI Arc, a private, non-profit corporation founded in 1955
to provide services to persons with developmental disabilities and their
families. All proceeds from the Daggett Farm Greenhouse and Gift Shop
support programs that benefit these individuals. Programs are offered
that allow individuals with disabilities to benefit from horticultural
therapy and activities, and to demonstrate their abilities by helping to
provide the community with quality gardening services and
products.
Master Gardeners who volunteer at Daggett get involved with
the planting of plugs and seeds, starting as early as February.
Therapeutic gardens and disability-friendly gardens are also planted by
Master Gardeners each spring. Lots of activities are available for
volunteers, including working directly with the Horticultural Therapy
program.

Good Shepherd Community Gardens
The project is located on grounds of the Parish of the Good Shepherd in Pawtucket. Many of the neighbors live in two- and three-level houses, with no space to have gardens of their own, so the parishioners decided to turn the church south lawn over, build raise beds, and utilize it for community gardens. URI Master Gardeners involved here teach methods on how to plant, what to plant, when to plant, how to nurture the plants, how to utilize compost, and, if there is sufficient harvest, how to preserve, freeze, etc. The plan is that this project will become a model for other entities to copy throughout Pawtucket.

Prescott Farm Period Gardens
Project
The management of Prescott Farm's gardens and landscape will actively
support the Newport Restoration Foundation's (NRF) mission to preserve
and educate. Specifically, wise land-use of the property, including
open-space preservation and replication of historic gardening and agricultural
uses, reflects NRF's commitment to preserve Aquidneck Island's landscape,
built environment, and cultural history. As part of NRF's strong emphasis
on education, this project provides multi-faceted learning opportunities,
with an emphasis on participatory activities.
Through research, planning, planting, maintaining, harvesting and other
activities related to Prescott Farm's gardens, this project will provide
many levels of learning for Master Gardeners, NRF staff, and the general
public. This living laboratory will produce two gardens that showcase
and interpret historic gardens and period horticulture as well as best
practices in contemporary gardening.
