Plant A Row for the Hungry
In
Rhode Island, 34,000 of our neighbors go hungry; half of them are children. About
51,000 of our neighbors count on the Rhode Island Community Food Bank for food
each month, and the need continues to grow.
In 2006, volunteers harvested more than 8400 pounds of vegetables, apples,
and herbs through the University of Rhode Island and individual Master Gardener gardens, in partnership
with the Rhode Island Community Farm. In addition, gardens at places of worship,
schools, and gardeners' backyards supplied fresh produce that went directly to
people through food pantries, apartments for the elderly, and homeless shelters.
As gardeners
participating in Plant A Row For The Hungry, we can help supply some of the fresh
vegetables and fruit that many of our neighbors can't afford to buy.
You don't need
a big garden to help, and every little bit of produce counts. Even people who
grow vegetables in containers can participate.
How
to Help | Where to Donate Food
How
to Help
If you
only have a little space, share your harvest with a needy neighbor. Everyone appreciates
a fresh vegetable.
If
you have a garden, grow some extra plants and share the produce with a community
food bank or a place of worship. They know the families who need food. Or call
Sue
Scotti in North Kingstown at 401-268-3805 to find out about the emergency food pantries in your community.
If
you have no space to grow vegetables, consider starting a garden at your place
of worship, neighborhood school, or community center. The URI Master Gardeners
will help you get started with soil testing, garden plans and seeds - all free
- just call Sue or Tom.
You can also volunteer at one of the Rhode Island
Community Farm gardens in East Greenwich, Cumberland, and Bristol, or in the apple
orchard at the University of Rhode Island. For information about volunteering,
call Steve Connors at 401-431-0080.
Thank you for your kindness and your
interest in helping our neighbors in need. If we can offer any help or advice,
or for a start up packet, call Sue, or send an e-mail to PlantaRowRI@cox.net
top
of page Where
To Donate Food
Gardeners and poultry fanciers are encouraged to bring
fresh vegetables, herbs, flowers, and eggs to shut-ins and elderly people in their
neighborhood first. The clergy at every church, temple and mosque knows of people
who need fresh food. Also, the people who come to senior centers for free or low-cost
lunches need fresh vegetables; bring your harvest there in the morning so they
can take some home after lunch.
If you still can't find anyone in the neighborhood,
here's a list of agencies, affiliated with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank,
that need fresh food. The list is arranged alphabetically by community with phone
numbers and times of operation. It's best to call ahead to be sure that someone
will be there.
